Patients are only seen at the request of a general practitioner (or another consultant). We believe that a close relationship with primary care is the best way to ensure your patients receive optimal care.

Please make use of the guidance contained in the links below to refer patients for outpatient clinic consultations and endoscopy. Instruction on how to obtain informal advice is also provided.

Outpatient Clinic Consultations

We recommend Choose & Book as the preferred method of referral to the out-patients clinic in line with PCT agreement. If you have access to Choose and Book (C&B) please refer your patients via this method to arrange their first hospital appointment.

However, if you are not using Choose and Book please use our Gastrointestinal Referral Form and send this via EPOC.

Alternatively, we accept typed referral letters which should be faxed to 0151-706-5837 or sent to:

            Patient Registration
            Medical Records Department
            Royal Liverpool University Hospital
            Prescot Street
            L7 8XP

All referals are pooled and allocated to consultants or teams with the most suitable sub-specialist expertise.

We aim to see the majority of ‘routine’ referrals within 6 weeks. If you wish your patient to be seen urgently, please telephone the consultants secretary or fax 0151 706 5655.Urgent’ cases will usually be seen within 2-3 weeks.

Patients should be pre-investigated according to the OBS schedule and all results enclosed with the referral. Alternatively, we will arrange to pre-investigate the patient before clinic which may result in a delay in your patient being seen.

Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Referrals

We aim to provide an expedient service for all patients referred to us.

Access to outpatient endoscopy is subdivided into two-week rule (2WR) and routine open access services.

Standardised criteria dependent forms should be used to refer all patients and sent via EPOC. Do not use Choose and Book.

2-week rule referrals can be faxed to ‘Urgent OP Referrals’ on 0151 706 5661.

Informal Advice

Out of hours, a consultant gastroenterologist is always on-call. A duty specialist registrar is always available and can be contacted through switchboard (0151-706-2000) to help with any gastroenterological problem. During office hours consultants may be contacted through their secretaries.
