Services

The upper GI services at the Royal Liverpool are a specialist centre and a tertiary referral unit. It is part of the regional Upper GI multidisciplinary cancer network that works in close collaboration with the Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital, Whiston Hospital, Warrington Hospital and the Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology.

We offer a wide range of specialist out-patient clinics including the 2 week upper GI suspected cancer service, Barrett’s & Dysphagia Clinic etc (see table 2). We perform an extensive range of endoscopic Upper GI techniques and therapy including; advanced trimodal imaging (autofluorescence & narrow-band with magnification),  chromoendoscopy, endoscopic ultrasound, oesophageal dilatation, oesophageal and gastric outlet stenting, Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR), thermal tumour ablation with argon plasma coagulation, laser therapy and now HALO Radiofrequency ablation.

Upper GI Bleeding Service

This is an emergency 24/7 in-patient service where patients with upper GI bleeding/haemorrhage have an endoscopy for diagnosis and treatment of their bleeding. This is a tertiary referral service that accepts patients throughout the region. It offers multi-modal types of intervention including  TIPSS for patients with varicael bleeding

Oesophageal and Gastric Dilatation

A specialised endoscopic procedure that can be performed as in- or out-patient that widens (dilates) a narrowing within the oesophagus or stomach by special balloon

Oesophageal Gastric Stenting

Usually a metal mesh placed at Endoscopy to bridge a narrowing within the oesophagus or stomach and thus help food and drink to pass and help problems such as swallowing difficulties. Can be an in-or out-patient procedure.

Thermal Tumour Ablation

A highly sensitive and specific non-invasive method for diagnosis of Helicobacter Pylori. GPs have direct access.

Hydrogen breath tests

The measurement of expired hydrogen after ingestion of an appropriate substrate is an indicator of gut bacterial activity used for the diagnosis of small bowel bacterial overgrowth, lactose intolerance and oral-caecal transit time.
